SYDNEY

The Sydney option is only for surgery there is not a team or clinic as such. Information recently is that there are 2 surgeons in Sydney however we only have information from Dr Peter Haertsch. The surgeon does require you to have a good supportive G.P., an Endocrinologists report concerning the hormonal reassignment you have undergone and favourable psychiatric assessments from two independent Psychiatrists before he will consider you for reassignment. This can all be done in your home state and once he has all this he will need blood tests for HIV/aids and hepatitis b/c one series as early as possible and a second series not more than a month prior to surgery. He will do the surgery after a one year 'real life test ' (R.L.T.) period and most post-operative people agree you need at least twelve months to two years living and working in your new role before you even consider surgery, its a big decision to make and once reassignment is done there is no going back!!.
His surgical technique is a little different to that of the Melbourne surgeons, he still uses the penile inversion and will extend the vaginal length with a split skin graft from the thigh or a whole skin graft from the tummy if required ( the tummy technique is more expensive but he includes a tummy tuck or Pitanguy lipectomy). The difference comes in the clitoroplasty, instead of leaving some tissue intact for a future procedure, he uses micro-surgical techniques to dissect the penile stump leaving the main penile nerves intact then after removing the excess stump tissue he uses the remaining erectile tissue, nerves and blood supplies to form a functional, sensitive and aesthetically accurate hooded clitoris. His costs are some what higher however.
